I thought that Prototype 2 was a fun, but familiar kind of gaming experience. It is a game from the PS3, Xbox 360 generation of consoles and without sounding negative, it feels like it. The first game many people felt set the foundation for something that could be really special. While I am not sure it ever lives up to that, what we have here is a fun, loud and over the top gaming experience that is well worth having.

You Killed My Family

The story of the game is a bit of a mixed bag. When you first start playing the game you get really sucked in and think that it is going to be a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. Prototype 2 has a new main protagonist in military man, James Heller. New York is getting decimated by these “zombies” monsters or whatever you want to call him and he tells his family to stay home and they will be safe.

Well, they get killed and this puts James well and truly over the edge. He sees the first games “hero” Alex Mercer and goes after him. Alex bestows powers unto James and now he is out for major revenge on those who he feels have done him wrong. The story turns into a meathead action fest pretty quickly, but it is still a fun time.

The destroyed New York City has three different areas that make it up and they are all varied enough for me. On the whole Prototype 2 is not exactly an amazing looking game. If I were a betting man, I would wager that much of what they have used is brought straight from the first game, especially the animations. The game has some very odd effects, especially the explosions. I only point these out as you see them all the time and they look terrible. It is like they were made and then just slapped into this game.

The voice acting and sound design in the game is pretty solid and for what you could class as an older game now. I do feel that there is not any terrible or cringy voice acting, even if our boy James does have some serious tude going on!

Make Me A Monster!

The gameplay is the real stat of Prototype 2. It is an action game that has shooting, hack and slashes action, and even a tad of stealth thrown in for good measure. James can make use of five special abilities that he can turn his hands into and you are always learning new mutations as you play. The game dishes these out at a fairly good rate. I had a lot of fun with deciding if I should take over someone’s body and go for a stealthy approach or if I should turn my hands into blades and just cut loose!

The game is a great deal of fun and while it is a little on the short side, I do feel that the length is ok. Prototype 2 is a really fun game, but it is a game that plays it very safe. I would say that it is just as good if not a tad better than the first game was. The story is just about right, but it is the very fun gameplay that will keep you hooked on this and make you want to see it through all the way to the end. It may not be perfect, but it does what it does very well.

An Action Adventure game focusing on a shape shifting protagonist.

Prototype 2 is a sequel Radical Entertainment's smash hit prototype. The game focuses on protagonist James Heller who is searching out a shady government agency and a rampant mutant (from the first prototype) that is responsible for a virus outbreak. Conveniently Heller has a slew of destructive powers ranging from flight, morphing hands into weapons and ingesting people to steal their memories and faces. No time for interrogations, Heller just eats whoever he suspects has useful information. The game plays out through a series of missions and there are side missions, secrets and collectibles to find. All of Heller's powers can be leveled up. The game was released in 2012.

Game Play

Prototype does one thing and does it well. It allows a player to play as a superhuman rampaging mutant able to rip the Gatling cannon off a tank to use against advancing soldiers or punch a helicopter out of the sky. Heller has ready access to most of his abilities via mapped buttons and different abilities can be reassigned easily ( though not typically in the middle of combat ) Missions are given by specific characters that Heller has to seek out, as well there are side missions that can be obtained by hacking into Blacknet, an underground Internet. In addition there are collectible 'black boxes' that are hidden in each of the game city's three zones that will take an hour or so to hunt down, adding some extra time and flavour to the game. Since the game is an open city format, you're free to do whatever you want at any time but the game will only progress when you accept a critical mission. All in all, if you take the time to complete everything in the game, it won't take more than 20 hours.

Prototype 2 came out 2012, but visually it doesn't look much upgraded from its 2009 prequel, prototype. It doesn't look bad, just dated and it's plain most of the effort was put into game play and not into visual eye candy. The game is ultra violent, the language is extremely coarse so this isn't a game for the family to play together. There is a story but its generic and is just a vehicle to get Heller from mission to mission
